Administrator’s Vision

The Administrators of Mythos seek to create a lasting community of roleplayers. We want to create a site that will last for years with a solid group of dedicated members. We want to encourage writers to improve their craft and become better roleplayers. Additionally, we would like to create a unique atmosphere that allows for great creativity and diversity in terms of how you're allowed to progress your character through the official and character driven plots and also how you're simply allowed to roleplay your character. The Administrators have vowed to stay active and keep the site alive for as long as there are roleplayers interested in Mythos. Finally, for all those who decide to join us: We Hope You enjoy Mythos and stay for a very long time.

The Setting

The concept for Mythos is based in many ways on the "Percy Jackson and the Olympians" series by Rick Riordan and the "Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flammel" series by Micheal Scott.

Mythos takes place on Earth in the year 2040. The world has been relatively stable over the past few decades until very recently. With the monsters and deities of multiple mythologies awakening, the Gods and Goddesses of the Greek Pantheon (who are in power) are uneasy. As they rally the few minor Gods, Goddesses, and monsters on their side, they realize they are hardly equipped to deal with the soon to be escalating situation. And thus, in a risky gamble, the Gods and Goddesses of Olympus are awakening and recognizing their bastard children. The Half-bloods are currently being rounded up and informed of the situation and their mission. Some choose to fight for their parents, others choose alternate paths. Having expected the occasional half-blood grudge towards their absent God-parents, the Olympians turned to the mortals, lifting the mist from a select few's eyes and enlisting them in their service. The onslaught of the ‘real world’ often leads some to madness but others, however, obtain great power. Nevertheless, humans, too, are sometimes not so willing to help Olympus.

The Forgotten Ones have also been gathering their forces. Their victory will be assured if they can unite the many pantheons against the Greek Gods and Goddesses. They tempt the Half-bloods and humans through promises of dark powers and immortality. However, while the Greek pantheon has the weakness of pride and complacency, the Forgotten Gods are split apart by treachery and a lack of trust.

Whatever the case, the escalating conflict has reflected itself not only through an increase in crime, tension, and, in general, conflict all over the world, but also through the average citizen of the street. Humans know something is brewing and most are very jumpy, though they may not know why.

The Mist

The mist is a magical substance supposedly created by the Gods and Goddesses of Olympus. It obscures the vision of regular mortals and, even sometimes, Half-bloods from the true nature of the world. They are unaware of the mythological tint all around them, keeping them in a state of oblivious ignorance. The mist creates, in their minds, that which is more acceptable to their senses.

The mist can be manipulated and controlled but only by a very select few. Half-bloods and monsters can sometimes manipulate it to fool humans or alter what the human or half-blood is seeing. It is important to note that this skill cannot merely be self-taught. If a character wishes to learn the secrets of the mist, they must be taught by someone who already knows via In Character roleplay.

Magic

Magic is a very powerful and malleable force on Earth. Long since thought a dead art, a select few humans and half-bloods have reawakened the art (taking it back from various monsters who had been the only users). What makes magic so powerful is the fact that it comes in so many forms. Magic manifests itself in nearly any form the creator wishes. So, in essence, how magic is used is up to the applicant. However, remember that if you are a necromancer and summon the dead, you may have to deal with Hades. Likewise if you summon lightening or water don't be surprised if there are repercussions from the Zeus and Poseidon. However, there are a select few mages who are crafty enough to trick the Gods and Goddesses...

Ultimately, the Administration feels that applicants should be able to customize their characters with a great deal of flexibility. Thus, there are no restrictions on what type of power your characters may have (within reason), whether it be stereotypical magic or something more creative. Realize, however, that a son of Poseidon will have a major advantage over someone who chooses to manipulate water, while a Son of Zeus would have an advantage over anyone who chooses to manipulate lightening. Nothing, however, is definite in the heat of battle.

Technology

The past three decades have witnessed a very unique phenomenon. Up until 2010, when new technologies came on the market they were usually immediately disseminated to the public. However, lately, many inventors and scientists have taken their inventions underground because of creative restrictions imposed by governments. And thus, the newest and most dangerous of technologies are being sold illegally, without any government oversight. This underground movement is rumored to have a spearhead or a leader but nothing is for sure. However, one thing is for certain. With no government oversight, weapons and very hi-tech machinery are being produced. It is rumored that these weapons can even harm the Gods. In a time when the Gods and Goddesses of Olympus are preoccupied with greater threats, it is wondered if they even realize the Humans possess such dangerous weapons or realize the threat they pose.

Quests

The Quest system we hope will be heavily integrated in the site. There will be a list of Quests for which members can choose to participate in. Some quests will require groups, others can be soloed, some will be race specific, while others may have different sets of criteria. Ultimately, a list of quests will be posted In Character at "Camp Half Blood" and Out of Character in the “Quests” board. Despite the list, the Gods, Goddesses, or Forgotten Deities may approach those loyal to them with special quests of a more plot oriented nature.

All quests are, more or less, run by an administrator. We will roleplay obstacles and, occasionally, aide. However, how your character performs determines whether you succeed. Realize that if you perform poorly (which is judged on a set of hidden criteria based on the quest) you can fail the quest (though you won't die unless you want too). However, if you succeed and meet the quest criteria, you will be rewarded. Your reward can sometimes be based on how impressively you perform. Remember the only real benefit of doing a quest is the reward and to say you have done it. You can do what the quest says without signing up for the quest but know that you won't get the reward. You may even purposefully fail a quest if you want. Many choices are involved in questing.

The Forgotten Ones

‘Forgotten Ones’ is a catch all term that describes all Gods and Goddesses from other pantheons. As of now, no Forgotten Ones have awakened and they are all planning to return from their respective shadow realms to Earth and reclaim their lost positions of power. Also, just because all Forgotten Ones are grouped together under one classification does not mean they get along. In fact, rivalries within pantheons and across different pantheons are extremely common and these rivalries are often fought out through the humans the Forgotten Ones employ and empower. Finally, despite not being awakened, many of the Forgotten Ones communicate via mind link or, even more commonly, via cell phone, from within the Shadow Realm they have retreated too. In this way, they order their various subjects to do their bidding and prepare the way for their eventual arrival.

If you want to be against the Olympians and have a Particular God or Goddess from another Pantheon that you fancy, you will be able to interact with them. In your application merely choose any God or Goddess from the Egyptian, Ancient Babylonian, or Norse pantheon. They are all Forgotten Ones. You can either choose to include that you are affiliated with them in your application or wait to roleplay it out. Administrators will briefly roleplay your chosen 'Forgotten One' master if you choose to roleplay.

Application Process

The Application process for Mythos is somewhat different than the usual for Acornrack or Avidgamers based roleplays. Signing up for the site is automatic and we have no application form that you have to fill out to become a member. One would merely sign up and you would be accepted as a 'Newbie' rank. You would then head over to the forums and click on 'Application' under the "Application and Character Database" multi-board. In the 'Application' thread there will be a locked sticky topic which contains the application template you will use. Merely fill out that document in a word processor of some sort and post it in the Applications forum. An administrator will get with you quickly and either upgrade your status to member immediately and move your application to the 'Character Board' for future reference or the Administrators will address points they believe need to change.

There are several reasons an Administrator may not immediately accept characters. For example, if there is a lack of depth or descriptiveness in certain areas, or your character contradicts him/herself in some way that does not make sense, or maybe even because your character doesn't fit in with the overall feel of the site. Strengths and weaknesses and how balanced your character is will also be evaluated. In the beginning, your character needs to be balanced. Through roleplaying, you make him/her a super powerful, God-like being bent on the worlds destruction, not through merely applying. Finally, an excess of grammatical errors or poor organization of the application may stall acceptance to the forums as well.

The reason we have decided to set the forums up in this manner is because all too often if someone gets declined they don't reapply. We want to keep every member who decides to apply. If something isn't satisfactory, the Administrators want to find some middle ground with you and your ideas and what we see as the Administrators vision for the site. We also realize that the many details of the site may be difficult to understand if you've only read the provided pages. We want the application process to be something that acquaints you with more story oriented facets of the site's theme.
